It won't be long now

Our launch is fast approaching!  A few more things to happen before the webstore is live.  One of those things is our product photo shoot with Tristan Crane tomorrow.  Be patient, we’re almost there.  And we are so excited!

Circle Skirt

We’ve reworked the classic circle skirt for the modern woman.  Our version is sleek and pared down (3/4 circle, actually) and has a handy pocket, because we don’t carry our purse around the office.
The cutting is complete, now let the stitching commence!

Moving

We’re Moving!  Actually, we already did.  Last weekend we got the keys for our new studio workshop and office.  Big thanks to Sean Orlando and David Robert Smith for lending their muscles.  We couldn’t have done it without them.

You are beautiful!

Spotted in Oakland: a message that always makes me smile.
Yes, you!  You are beautiful.  Let your true self shine through!

Production Begins

Just over a week ago, I tested the corrected pattern for our sleeveless top (one of the first Vermeulen & Co. pieces), and it’s good to go.
We’re doing the initial cut and sew for our line ourselves for a limited release coming Fall 2012 – very soon!
The full set of shirt patterns arrived today.  I’ve started cutting the first ones, and they’re beautiful.  It’s very exciting to see it all take shape!

Factory Visit

Last week I visited two apparel factories in San Francisco. I was secretly thrilled to recognize the brand of clothes currently being produced in one of them. The finished garments look great, and it’s a brand that’s been around in S.F. for a long time. It’s exciting to play a part in furthering local and domestic manufacturing.

Mongolian Sheep

Over the last several weeks in Mongolia, I've seen sheep.  Many sheep.  They graze the seemingly endless green grasses of the steppes in vast numbers.
I've also seen wonderful wool products, from jackets and hats, to rugs and bags.  Until yesterday, I hadn't found the connection between the two.
In the early afternoon beat, we trekked to the industrial outskirts of Ulaan Bataar, where blocks were filled with mountains of scrap metal.  Down a dirt lane, through a gate, past a large dog, sits the cozy felting studio of Maira Danyei.  There she has bags of raw wool which she hand dyes and turns into a beautiful array of goods.  My favorite are the nuno felted scarves.
She has been felting for much of her life, but opened her own business two years ago.  Best wishes Maira!

Moving forward, step by step

We’ve picked a direction for a small launch this Fall – aiming for October at this point.
We’re producing a shirt, skirt, and belt that will look great together or mixed with other pieces in your wardrobe.  Stay tuned for more details!

"Buy less. Buy what you need, buy things that you love, and take care of what you own."

Great advice from Elizabeth Cline, author of Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion, summarized in this article.

Time for Play

I’m savoring a relaxing week in the woods in one of my favorite places in the world, tucked away in the Sierra Foothills of California.
Thriving with the playful company of many friends, and dancing for hours every day.
Such a delicious time here!

Sourcing Better Fabrics

The garment district in New York is dense. There are myriad trims, mountains of notions and any number of showrooms tucked into tall buildings.
Before heading back to SF, I met with several fabric reps who showed me their wonderful textiles. One in particular had swatch after swatch of handsome cottons. I think Kyra and Bree will love them, and I hope you will too!
When I asked him if he carried any organic cottons, the response was unexpected: He said he'd carried organics for several years. Each designer had a different complaint and a different expectation about the types of dyes and finishes used, or fair trade practices, water consumption and more. At a certain point he gave up, unable to even answer many of these questions, let alone comply. Now he has none.

This got me thinking about how the very people who care about producing with organics might be hindering progress. Should we expect perfection? Or should we encourage a step by step shift towards Better? And if the latter, how might that be clearly communicated to customers? Or perhaps it will be a shift in consumer demand that changes the market.

What do you think?

In Praise of Slowness

For those of you who want to check out the book Gerritdina mentions, "In Praise of Slowness," but don't have time to pick up yet another book... This TED talk by Carl Honore is a great overview of his ideas about celebrating and savoring life.

A Trip to NY!

Sometimes even the most frenetic of cities collectively slows down. There's not much that causes New York to take a deep breath. But that's exactly what has happened today as the heat and humidity have nestled in like a down comforter. In an attempt to get some air, I've come up here to the amazing Highline to relax, read, and soak my bare feet in the cool water. Perhaps appropriately, I'm reading Slowness, by Carl Honore. A wonderful investigation into slow movements and the search for balance and fulfillment in an accelerating world. I'm certainly enjoying my slow day today.

But now I'm off to meet friends for a glass of wine. Chilled please!

As week 10 draws to a close, Bree and Kyra are putting finishing touches on samples 9 and 10.

Well done, ladies! That's a lot of sewing, and the pieces look great.

10 Samples

So what about the other 10 samples, you ask?
And why will there be 10?
The Vermeulen team is working on this small collection to give you a taste of the fashion delights they have up their sleeves. Because simply telling you about the Vermeulen clothing that feels great to wear and is comfortable on both your body and your conscience isn't enough. We want to show you!
Bree has designed a dress, pants, 2 skirts, 2 shirts, a shell top, and more.
Kyra is working on a blazer that I think you're gonna love.
More sneak peeks coming soon!

Testing a Pattern

Cutting out the fabric to test the current largest size of the graded tux shirt pattern. A shirt in Kyra's size! She's excited.

Next up: a sample for Kyra in production fabrics! Bree has finished hers and it looks awesome.
Wait 'til you see the handwoven fabric they each chose for the contrast bib - Kyra's has an orange stripe in it! A surprising color choice for her, I know. ;)

The Magic Ten: Design Samples

After many months of exploring the nuts and bolts of garment manufacturing, Bree and Kyra have gone back to the drawing board to create 10 design samples (prototypes) within 10 weeks. Quite the task, but I think they're up for the challenge.

The 10 samples need to be finished by the end of the 1st week of June. (This being mid-April, they're already on week 3).

Sample 1: The Vermeulen tux shirt design has been patterned, and the graded pattern arrived in the mail last week. It was so exciting to open it up and take a look!
The lines of the nested pattern are pretty.
